World from the Water Tower

This is my polarised panoramic shot from atop the Maungaraki Water Tower for DSDN144 Digital Photographics. Suprisingly as nice as it was having a clear day to do the panoramic shot, I think it may well have been easier to make a world out of a photo that had clouds in it! Maybe next time :)

DSDN141 Lab 1

Draw a piece of paper on a piece of paper. Well, I decided to turn my piece of paper into a piece of origami, that looks like a tree!

DSDN144 Project 1 Shoot 1

Here is the link to the first shoot I did for DSDN144 Project 1. I've never used flickr before so please bear with me while I find the best way to show these photos on my blog :)

DSDN144 Project 1 Proposal

For my first project for DSDN144 Digital Photographics, I have chosn to investigate and photograph elements of retirement homes, in particular Parkwood Retirement Home in Waikanae.

To me, retirement homes house an innate sense of mortality overcast with a distinctive facade of happiness; my grandad has always made reference to the birds in the birdcage outside his window stating that all who find themselves within the walls of the rest home are trapped and simply waiting to die. Everyone I have met there is under no illusion as to the intention of the facility - to house and oversee the elderly until their time has come and to provide every assistance required to get there, yet both the people and the place provide an image of escapism. Exotic trees in white plastic pots and colourful birds line the hallways of cells, cuisine in white plastic trays speak of faraway countries never to be seen again, yet oddly what would seem like a hellish tragedy to the young is a sacred sanctuary to the old.

It is my intention to understand and portray these notions within my photography, to show from the eyes of our elders what it means to be old and the space manufactured to aid them comfortably into the next life.

Solidworks Tutorials

Definitely the tutorial that gave me the most grief, though in doing so helped me understand the importance of having fully defined sketches.

Solidworks Tutorials

Here are some screenshots from making the assembly from the Solidworks tutorials. Had a little bit of trouble getting them to go together, but I got there in the end.

Drawing Words

Here is my drawing of the word "Duality" for the exercise from the first DSDN104 studio.

I drew this because I thought of the phrase "birds of a feather", reversed it on itself and tried to imagine a "bird of two feathers" and ended up with a feather of two birds. Just a little confusing eh?

Ideas for '3 words" for 104

Just a couple of words from the brainstorm, just picking words off the top of my head at this point:

Rue, Fossilised, Conquest, Turmoil, Oxymoron, Abridge, Spectral, Reconcile, Consecrate, Consolidate, Duality, Dissent, Brazen, Consummate, Brazen, Vilify, Medley, Traverse, Contest, Flourish, Convulse, Subvert, Emerge, Evolve, Thrive, Abridge

I've decided to choose my words first and my precedents afterwards, as I am hoping to decide on a coherent set of words that present an idea and consequently find images that run along the same line.

Solidworks Tutorials

Here are the finished models for the basic Solidworks tutorials from the first 104 lab. As easy as Solidworks makes it to design 3D models, I can also see that there is a phenomenal ammount of functionality in this program which may take more than a few tutorials to learn :)
